The footage is early and unfinished, of course. Not that there was much doubt, but I’ve confirmed with Rockstar sources that this weekend’s massive Grand Theft Auto VI leak is indeed real. He called it “one of the biggest leaks in video game history and a nightmare for Rockstar Games.” First, video game journalist Jason Schreier tweeted that his sources confirmed that the footage was real. However, there are two things that seemingly prove its authenticity. After all, some of the videos looked like they were using assets from Grand Theft Auto 5. Of course, the authenticity of these leaks was questionable.
Speculations, however, point towards this being one of extortion: A deal where teapotuberhacker would get something from the developers to prevent any further leaks. Exactly what kind of deal they might be looking for is still up in the air. They mentioned that they were “looking to negotiate a deal”. He continued that if employees from Rockstar or Take-Two wanted to contact him, they can do it through Telegram or an email he gave. In the update, they mentioned that after “unexpectedly” going viral, he was getting so many messages on Telegram. Roughly 12 hours after the initial upload of the leak, teapotuberhacker updated his post (See picture below). Various videos popped up, with people creating Twitter accounts solely to upload and share the leaks. On Twitter, the hashtags #GTA6Leaked and #GTAVI are still trending as of the writing of this post. 90 videos have been posted to a GTA Forums fan site, and they show new GTA VI interactions, characters, and more. Though many of the videos do coincide with other recent leaks, someone would have had to put a lot of time and detail into faking these files.This topic quickly became viral. A massive leak appears to show Grand Theft Auto VI footage. As one of the most anticipated upcoming games, GTA 6 is prime for people attempting to claim fake internet clout.
Rockstar has yet to comment on the leak and the legitimacy of the footage is certainly in question. The few videos that do show environments appear to be in a Miami-like setting, matching recent GTA 6 leaks. Whether this is the same person is still up for debate, though the end result appears to have been the same in either case.
This used the same methodology as the Uber hack, with the infiltrator posting, “ I announce I am a hacker and Uber has suffered a data breach,” through the employee's chat messages.
